Ar Tonelico 3

Ar Tonelico Qoga is the 3rd game in the Ar Tonelico multimedia series by Gust.

The players will take on the role of a young steeplejack apprentice called Aoto in the planet of Ar Ciel. Aoto is awakened by a ruckus outside his house and goes to investigate. He finds out that Clustanian soldiers are attacking an old man and girl that looks like a swordswoman. The story focuses around conflict between nations and finding out what is really going on behind the scenes.

The story and characters were average. The gameplay is real time  where encounters happen randomly. Only one Reyvateil who are like wizards, can be present in battle. You have to protect the Reyvateil from enemy attacks as they are defenceless. During battles, you control three Vanguards (helpers).

The player can make the Reyvateil shed off part of her clothes in order to increase the power of her Song Magic but this move has to executed with precision at a specific moment. If the move sequence is done correctly, the Reyvateil will remove some of her clothes. However, if the moves were not done properly, the Reyvateil will refuse to shed her clothes. The player can use up to four levels of purge.

Some enemies can use powerful attacks that can hit the entire player party but require a charge time. The player has to attack the enemy before they can launch their attack. If all three Vanguard fall in battle, the game is over, regardless of whether the Reyvateil is alive or not. When a Reyvatiel is approached by enemies, an alarm will sound. You have to attack the enemies before the Reyvateil can be harmed.

There is a talk topics mode of the game, where you can bond with your party members and the more you bond the more bonuses you get. The graphics and art was pretty decent and the music is pretty good. The localization is just awful all across the board from countless grammar errors to words that were not translated properly. At the time when it came out NIS even came up with this DLC scam where you had to get DLC just to view content that should have been there in the base story in the first place.

Overall, it was an average game.

It gets 3 out of 5 stars.
