Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread was a cancelled game for the DS due to technological limitations but was revitalized by MercurySteam for the Switch due to its more powerful hardware. It is a single player game. The story takes place right after Metroid Fusion so this takes place way after the events of all the games from the mainline series including Prime and other Metroid games. It goes back to its 2DMetroidvania direction after a long time. You have to explore various places to find new items develop higherabilitiesin order to progress through the story and you can find save points to help you heal.

It took me some time to get used to the map design and I often had to rely on a walkthrough just to figure out what to do next.

Samus Aran is sent by the Galatic Federation to planet ZDR to investigate a strange signal. ZDR is infested with ravenous creatures and E.M.M.I robots that are stalking the planet causing massive amounts of chaos. Samus is being hunted by these incredibly dangerous machines that can kill you in one hit and she must develop new capabilities to combat the deadly robots.

There are many new abilities to discover and items to use to survive your quest. The boss fights were pretty good and Kraid returns after a long absence and maybe being an easter egg in a Super Smash Bros game.

The atmosphere in particular is almost like a horror game. The graphics and art design were outstanding and the music was enjoyable. The controls were very good and the full 360 degree aiming is great to use. Melee combat in the game returns from samus returns.

There is a bosh rush mode and an easy mode included in a recent update. However, it is still difficult especially defeating the E.M.M.I robots.

Overall, this was an excellent game.

It gets 4 out of 5 stars.
