My Dress Up Darling is an anime adaptation of the manga of the same name.
Gojo a reclusive high school student who has a passion making outfits for dolls. He wants to become an expert doll maker but since he was mocked for his passion, he has kept it a secret from his classmates. One day by coincidence, one of his classmates, the very popular Marin Kitwaga finds out about Gojo’s passion and enlists him in making outfits and whatever else she needs for cosplay, as she is obsessed with it.
The story focuses on their partnership and (eventual romance) friendship as Gojo never really seemed to have had friends until meeting Marin.
Marin loves Gojo’s creative designs as they were really well made and unique.
Marin, out of anyone Gojo has interacted with has been the kindest and most open minded and accepting of his hobby. She tries to get Gojo to stick up for himself as he is often taken advantage of by his peers.
Gojo and Marin are both likeable and the show wasn’t short of comedic moments with the characters. The chemistry between them was very fun to watch and every scene they had always was entertaining. The side characters like Marin’s friends were entertaining too. There is a good amount of fanservice but it’s fitting given the story is about cosplay. Marin stated that there are other girls into cosplay really showing how Gyrau subculture goes outside of the conventions of what girls must and must not like.
The atmosphere was pretty cheerful and upbeat and this isn’t really the kind of show that focuses on melodrama. The voice acting was more than adequate, both sub and dub. The art and animation were certainly one of the best Cloverworks has done so far. The music as well was pretty nice too. Don’t expect much character development in the show as it only adapts the early parts of the manga so it’s a bit on the short side.
It is an entertaining show and I certainly enjoyed it.
It gets 4 out of 5 stars.
