Persona 5 The Animation
Persona 5 The Animation is an anime adaptation of the video game of the same name. It follows the same story of Ren Amamaiya who gets framed for a crime he hasn’t committed. He and the rest of the Phantom Thieves have to clear Ren’s name and stop the corruption overtaking Japan. Ren uses an app, The Metaverse Navigator, to change corrupted people into good ones.
The voice actors are back and are excellent as usual. The story is sadly abridged and many of the plot points are rushed, especially the confidants part. This is partly due to the fast pacing of the series. The characters are as obnoxious or uninteresting as before like Morgana, Ryuji, Sae, Mika or Haru to name a few. Ren is more openly expressive in the anime and even some of the “infamous” lines of dialogue from the original game make it in the anime at certain points. The confidant characters are pretty minimalistic and don’t get the same focus as much in the anime.
The art is great as before but the same cannot be said for the animation as certain parts like the action scenes looks unfinished. The CGI left a lot to be desired.
At least the anime still maintains Persona 5’s distinctive visual style though even if the animation wasn’t good. The music is just as good as the game itself as Shoji Meguro, the game composer wrote the music for the anime.
It gets 3 out of 5 stars.
If you are a hardcore Smt/Persona fan, you can watch the series but prepared to be disappointed.
