Phantasy Star Portable

Phantasy Star Portable is a spin off from the mainline Phantasy Star games for the psp developed by the Sonic Team and SEGA.

Its main focus is on fending off remaining S.E.E.D forces and learn more about the origins of humanity and the history of space in the universe of phantasy star too.

The story isn’t really anything that original and neither were the characters either especially during a time where sci fi anime in the mid 2000s was quite the big thing.

You play as a generic member of the Guardians who you can customize and create and choose which class you wanna go for too.

You even get dialogue choices too but in the end for the most part it just doesn’t really feel like they’ll matter anyways like in another sega series as of late called shin megami tensei/persona.

Gameplay wise its pretty grindy and you’ll be grinding for a while until you’re ready to progress throughout the story.

Lot of the gameplay style is like the .hack series where its focused on a mmo format but for single player only offline.

Combat wise it feels kind of like monster hunter with the variety of styles you can go for with its own advantages and disadvantages based on what your preferences are.

Its fairly easy too so newcomers to jrpgs on the psp should feel more than welcome to playing this game.

I know its unfair to compare it to dark souls but the only thing i can really do to compare to it, is how just like dark souls, you can’t really pause the game during mission modes so hope you got good time management, but at least you still retain the objects and experience you get throuhgout the mission.

The graphics and art for its time is pretty decent still holds up well too.

Your missions are simple its usually kill the enemies and collect your rewards rinse and repeat.

The voice acting and dialogue are as expected from SEGA games to be below average.

The music was pretty decent too.

Overall it was an average game.

It gets 3 out of 5 stars.
