The Caligula Effect 2

The Caligula Effect 2 is a sequel to the first game in the series but you can play this sequel without having to play the first game, The Caligula Effect: Overdose.

The story is about a group of students who strive to break out of Redo a digital world with others caught in it. It is a turned based combat system and each move you take consumes player points so you may need to recharge from time to time.

The story concept was fairly interesting. The graphics and artstyle were good and so were the character designs.  The dungeon design was fairly straightforward to go through. Some dungeons had awkward design choices like forced stealth in one section and some backtracking here and there. The localization by NIS is worse than I expected it to be with the amount of memetalk from facts and logic to yolo and swag being predominantly used. It is clear as day that NIS should not be involved in localization in any kind of capacity and it is disrespectful to the original creators visions. The dialogue for the most part plays out the same regardless of outcome you choose.

There are moments in the game where you can bond with characters and be able to learn more about their pasts and unlock new abilities. You can upgrade X’s abilities like increasing the voltage meter for combat and choosing which song to use for a unique powerup. Each character can unleash their own unique power attacks after filling their personal meter.

Overall, it was a decent game and a vast improvement on the original.

It gets 4 out of 5 stars.
